Current Study: The Verily Verily Statements of Jesus
In the King James Version of the Bible, Jesus made twenty statements in the Gospel of John that begin with the words, “Verily, verily, I say unto you.” In the New King James, these words are translated as “Most assuredly, I say to you”; in the English Standard Version and in the New American Standard Bible, they are translated as “Truly, truly, I say to you”; and in the New International Bible, they are translated as “I tell you the truth”. Regardless of how the phrase is translated, the emphasis is the same: Jesus is making a statement of profound truth that we need to know and understand. Jesus is taking the opportunity to call strict attention to something He was about to say by giving it tremendous emphasis. So when He gave a preface to a teaching and said, “Verily, verily, I say unto you,” our eyes should take note instantly of His statement following the preface, for it is of the utmost importance. For the next few months we will be looking at these statements in detail to gain understanding of what Jesus meant when He made these statements. The lessons are as follows:
Week 1 – “Hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.” – John 1:51
Week 2 – “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” – John 3:3
Week 3 – “Unless one is born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” – John 3:5
Week 4 – “The Son can do nothing of Himself, but what he sees the Father do; for whatever He does, the Son also does in like manner.” – John 5:19
Week 5 – “He who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment; but has passed from death into life. – John 5:24
Week 6 – “The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God: and those who hear will live.” – John 5:25
Week 7 – “You seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves, and were filled.” – John 6:26
Week 8 – “Moses did not give you the bread from heaven; but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. – John 6:32
Week 9 – “He that believes in Me has everlasting life.” – John 6:47
Week 10 – “Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man, and drink His blood, you have no life in you.” – John 6:53
Week 11 – “Whosoever commits sin is a slave of sin.” – John 8:34
Week 12 – “If anyone keeps My word he shall never see death.” – John 8:51
Week 13 – “Before Abraham was, I AM.” – John 8:58
Week 14 – “He who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.” – John 10:1
Week 15 – “I am the door of the sheep.” – John 10:7
Week 16 – “Unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains alone: but if it dies, it produces much grain.” – John 12:24
Week 17 – “A servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.” – John 13:16
Week 18 – “He who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.” – John 13:20
Week 19 – “He who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to My Father.” – John 14:12
Week 20 – “Whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.” – John 16:23
